OFF290 Medical Terminology

After successful completion of this course, the student will be able to spell and define medical prefixes, suffixes, and terminology peculiar to various medical specialities.  All of the work for this course (except tests) may be done outside of class.

Prerequisites

Although there are no prerequisites for this course. You should be aware that the ability to memorize is essential to being able to successfully pass the tests.  Students who have very poor teaching and/or spelling skills often have difficulty with this course.

Registered Students

Immediately after enrolling, send Cathy Sutton an e-mail at csutton@howardcc.edu; include your name, the semester, the course and section. You will receive specific course instructions the week classes start.

Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Define and spell medical terms that a medical specialist is most likely to encounter in physical exams, medical correspondence, surgery, pathology, and x-ray reports

  • Respiratory system
  • Male reproductive system
  • Female reproductive system
  • Cardiovascular and lymphatic systems
  • Digestive system
  • Obstetrics and neonatology
  • Eye and ear
  • Musculoskeletal system
  • Nervous system and psychiatric terms
  • Endocrine system
  • Urinary system

Course Format

This course:

  • Is not self-paced. However, you may accelerate your pace so that you may finish the course in fewer than 14 weeks.
  • Does not require on-campus meetings. However, this course does require on-campus attendance for tests. This course has 13 tests that have weekly deadlines for completion.  The tests must be taken at the college during any open hours in the Office Technology classroom.  Please note however that all OFFI-290 online students are welcome to come to the Office Technology classroom to do classwork and/or to get personal lhelp from and instructor.
  • Does not require real-time chats.
  • Uses email for communication.

Orientation

This course does not have a face-to-face orientation. You will receive detailed course information the week classes start.
