This course will provide students with the opportunity to study human behavior in sport and exercise settings.  It is designed to provide students with information about research in the field of sport psychology as well as practical knowledge to become a more effective fitness instructor, athlete, athletic administrator, physical educator, personal trainer, or coach.  It will examine theories of individual personality and explore the social phenonena associated with sport participation.

Statement on General Education and Liberal Learning

A liberal education prepares students to lead ethical, productive and creative lives and to understand how the pursuit of lifelong learning and critical thinking fosters good citizenship.  General education courses form the core of a liberal education whin higher education curriculum and provide a coherent intellectual experience for all students by introducing the fundamental concepts and methods of inquiry in the areas of mathematics, the physical and natural sciences, the social sciences, the arts and the humanities, and composition.  The course is part of the general education core experience at Howard Community College.

Overall Course Objectives

 Upon completion of this course studets will be able to:

• Describe the psychological factors that influence involvement and performance in sport and exercise settings.
• Identify psychological characteristics associated with successful exercise and athletic performance.
• Explain how mental skills are utiolized inexercise and sport.
• Demonstrate practical skills and knowledge of exercise and sport psychology that can be applied to athletes, coaches, personal trainers, and exercise leaders.
• Identify the special problems that are frequently encountered in sports including injuries, eating disorders, substance abuse, and overtraining.

Course Format

• This class is not self-paced and the course material is sequential.
• Does not require scheduled on-campus meetings.  However, unit and final exams will be administered through the Test Center and will require students to come to campus during the week inchich the exam is assigned.
• Does not require real-time chats.
• Is designed in 14 learning modules, each module corresponding to one or more chapters in the textbook and focusing on a specific area of Sport and Exercise Psychology.  for each module the student will watch the associated video found on the texbook website, read the associated one or more chapters in the texbook, review the module tutorial, complete the assignments, and take the quiz for each module following modules 5 and 11, the student will take unit exams, and at the completion of the topic modules, the student wil take a cumulative final exam.

Orientation

This course has no required fact-to-face orientation.

Course Requirements

Reading Assignments:  It is recommended that students complete the readings before other course component.

Tutorials:  14 online tutorials, corresponding to the content in one or more chapters int he text book.

Web Assignments:  Students will be given assignments that relate to the materials presented in the learning modules and textbook chapters.

Writing Assignments:  Students will be asked to complete 3 papers to show application of concepts presented inthe text.

Quizzes:  Students will complete 14 quizzes, each covering 1 learning module.

Final:  Students will complete a comprehensive final.

Exams

Students will take 14 online quizzes, and 2 unit exams and a cumulative final on-campus or proctored at an acceptable institution. All quizzes and the final will consist of multiple-choice and will be timed.  The unit exams may consist of matching, multiple-choice, short answer, and essay questions.
