Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Write grammatically correct and imaginatively constructed poetry and fiction.
  • Provide constructive feedback on the writings of others.
  • Use literary devices and/or characteristics such as imagery, setting, metaphor, characterization, dialogue, point of view, and theme.
  • Compare and contrast traditions, styles, forms, and conventions of writing.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how writing reflects the human spirit in aesthetic forms and humanistic ideas.

  • The writing of poetry and fiction.
  • The reading and critiquing of poetry and fiction by published writers and members of the seminar.

  • Is not self-paced. There is a definite schedule with definite due dates.
  • Does not require on-campus meetings.
  • Does not require real-time chats.

This course does not have a face-to-face orientation.

Course Requirements
  • Review the “What you should know before you register” section of the Distance Learning Homepage.
  • Students write poetry and fiction continuously throughout the semester.
  • It is essential that all students participate in the seminar by providing constructive feedback on a weekly basis.
  • There are assignments that ask the student to critique published poetry and fiction.
  • A museum visit is required to complete a poetry assignment.
