Online Course Description

This course is designed to introduce and acquaint students to the art of dance through the study of the evolution of movement into the present day forms of dance. Students will gain insight into the theory and practice of dance as well as the performers that showcase it. Lecture demonstrations, discussions, exams and viewing of live and taped dance performances will increase the student’s awareness and appreciation of dance as a performing art.

Guest lectures will be delivered on Folk dance and modern dance and additional lectures on  the elements of dance. These dates will be announced asap

Upon successful completion of the course the student will have:

  • An overview of the evolution of dance, emphasizing the connection of the past to the present
  • Gained a recognition of the basic principles of  Ballet, Modern, and Folk/Ethnic dance and be able to  relate it to other types of dance
  • Learned an appreciation for the process of creating dance through experimentation
  • Developed skills to evaluate dance performances effectively

Grading:

20% (200 points) of the grade is based on internet participation and interaction with other students. This will be monitored under the discussion tool. Students will be asked to communicate and reciprocate information with fellow students.

During orientation the first day, groups will be assigned for group work. Peer evaluation will be used to determine the percentage of participation in this activity.

Assessments on videos or dvds to be watched in the library will be attached to the modules that they pertain to. These will count as participation grades.

Each internet discussion, assessment or group participation will be given an assigned # of points to equal 200 or 20% of the course.

*Any assessment, tests, quizzes, exams or assignments turned in one day  late will be downgraded 10% per day late.

20% (200 points) of the grade is based on the successful completion of the homework assignments. Homework will be graded by percentage of accuracy. Missed homework will be points missed and late homework will be down graded 10% each day that it is not delivered.

20% (200 points) of the grade is based on the 2 quizzes to be delivered on the reading assignments and the classroom material- 10% (100points)each.

Quizzes and tests will be based on material delivered on the internet class site, information in the text, videos and guest lectures.

20% (200 points) of the grade is based on the exam covering the written assignments and classwork

*Tests will be taken in the test center or on the internet within a given time. In the case of an emergency-The student will have one week to make up the test unless prearranged with the permission of the Instructor. After the time for the test to be taken has expired, the test will be counted as 0%.

*It is the responsibility of the student to make the instructor aware of emergencies as soon as possible.

*Any assessment, tests, quizzes,exams or assignments turned in one day  late will be downgraded 10% per day late.

20% (200 points) of the grade is based on attendance at an instructor approved live performance of dance. The student is required to write a paper:

  • Describing the entire content of the concert,correlating coursework to the viewing i.e. purpose,dancer,energy, time and space and how they relate to theme if any for each dance work shown
  • Including his/her objective reaction to the dance
  • Talking about the difference between watching a performance live rather than on video
  • The paper is to be 5-6 typewritten pages, double-spaced and accompanied by a ticket stub and the program for the concert.
  • This paper may be turned in on the internet and the tickets and programs to my box at HVPA 200 as soon as it is completed, but no later than the last day of class
  • Grammactical and spelling errors will result in reduction of the grade

     Criteria for the performance to be viewed:

  • College Level Dance and above
  • Performance of Dance only
  • Must be a performance rather than a participation event
  • In a proscenium theater
  • Must be viewed during the course of this semester

*Any papers turned in one day late will be downgraded 10% per day late

*Extra credit assignments are available and will be posted on our website under the assignment list.

*Our course is on the internet, which means that the assignments will be available on the internet. You will be able to send the assignments to me and you will be able to view your grades on the internet site. You can use Internet Explorer for access but it will be easier with Mozilla Firefox. The first class meeting will be a comprehensive orientation on how to use the internet facilities.
