CMSY 104 Advanced Word Processing (Online)

This course is designed to give students advanced Microsoft® Word skills that include customizing and automating Word’s features; navigating in a document; creating source references, specialized tables and indexes; working with shared documents; and protecting documents.

Registered Students

Immediately after enrolling, send Cathy Sutton an e-mail at csutton@howardcc.edu; include your name, the semester, the course and section. You will receive specific course instructions the week classes start.

Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Customize paragraphs and pages.
  • Create charts.
  • Proof documents.
  • Customize the formatting of documents.
  • Navigate in a document.
  • Sort items in a document.
  • Create source references, tables of contents, and indexes.
  • Insert comments and track changes to a document.
  • Use various methods for protecting documents.

Major Course Topics

  • Customizing bulleted and numbered lists and headers and footers
  • Creating and formatting charts
  • Proofing documents and using Word’s research tools
  • Using AutoCorrect and working with fields
  • Working with themes, styles, bookmarks, and hyperlinks
  • Sorting text and data source records
  • Creating and formatting footnotes and endnotes
  • Creating and formatting tables of contents, tables of figures, tables of authorities, and indexes
  • Inserting comments in a document and tracking changes to a document
  • Protecting documents and using a digital signature

Course Format

This course:

  • Is not self-paced. However, you may accelerate your pace so that you may finish the course in fewer than 14 weeks.
  • Does not require on-campus meetings. However, this course does require on-campus attendance for tests. Tests may be taken during any open hours in the Office Technology classroom. Please note, however, that all CMSY-104 online students are welcome to come to the Office Technology classroom to do classwork and/or to get personal help from an instructor.
  • Does not require real-time chats.
  • Uses email for communication.


Orientation

This course does not have a face-to-face orientation. You will receive detailed course information the week classes start.

Course Requirements

  • Review the Checklist for Registered Online Students section of the Distance Learning Homepage.
  • This course is for students who have completed CMSY-102 Beginning Word Processing.
  • If you feel that you already have the skills included in Beginning Word Processing, you may take an exam to show that you have the skills to take Advanced Word Processing. Call Cathy Sutton at 443-518-4876 for more information.
  • Install Microsoft® Word 2007 on your computer.
  • Come to the college periodically to take both written and computer tests, which have deadlines for completion.
  • Complete three homework assignments.

Required:

Rutkosky and Rutkosky. Microsoft Word 2007, Level 2, Benchmark Series. Paradigm, 2008.

Exams

For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course has six exams, which have deadlines for completion. The exams must be taken at the college during any open hours in the Office Technology classroom. There are three theory exams (written) and three production exams (taken on the computer).
