BMGT 240 Human Resource Management

Management concepts are focused on the human element in business enterprises using on-line lectures, videos, case studies, on-line research and class discussions. Specific topics include employment, employee motivation, training, human relations and employee representation. Techniques of management will be emphasized.

Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Describe the functions and duties of a personnel department in relation to the rest of the organization.
  • Describe a typical personnel recruiting and selection process including the broad impact of the Internet on this process.
  • Analyze and design a resume.
  • Describe the various methods used for background checks of potential employees.
  • Describe various types of employee training programs.
  • Compare several theories of motivation.
  • Relate the importance of sound personnel policies to employee morale, employee efficiency and organizational goals.Identify various leadership styles.
  • Identify various communication efforts used by organizations.
  • Develop a list of benefits that an organization should have with cost containment in mind.
  • Identify various laws and regulations and describe how they affect personnel decisions.
  • Discuss equal employment legislation and affirmative action programs and the impact of cultural diversity on human resource management.
  • Discuss wage/salary issues in human resource management.
  • Discuss the diagnostic approach to looking at personnel problems.

Course Format

This course:

  • Is not self-paced.
  • Requires four Saturday on-campus meetings (2/16, 3/15, 4/12 and 5/10/08). There will be one exam on Saturday, April 12, 2008.
  • Does not require real-time chats.
  • The course material is sequential. There is a specific timeline for the completion of each assignment in this class.
  • Some of the types of learning activities or assignments required are:
  • Read chapter in the textbook.
  • Read reference material which has been provided within the class.
    • Discuss a topic each week with the class.
    • Research various topics on the Internet.
    • Work with other students on a group project.


Orientation

This course has a required face-to-face orientation. Check the list of scheduled orientations for the date, time, and location.

Course Requirements

  • Review the “What you should know before you register” section of the Distance Learning Homepage.
  • There will be one exam on Saturday, April 12, 2008.
  • The quizzes will be on-line.
  • Research papers.

Exams

There will be one exam on Saturday, April 12, 2008.For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course has two proctored exams and a final exam at the HCC Testing Center for students in the local region or at a regional institution for remote students. The exam will have a flexible window of time during which it needs to be taken rather than a single date and time.
