BMGT 145 Principles of ManagementThis course will enable the student to identify and describe the major functions of management which include planning, organizing, leading and controlling. The student will also participate in individual and group activities which will provide practice in exercising these functions. Within this framework, the student will be able to describe and apply the concepts of major contributors to the field of management such as Drucker, Taylor, Hertzberg, McGregor, Fayol, Maslow, Deming and Crosby.

Overall Course Objectives Once you have completed this course you will be able to:
Identify various classical management theorists.
Explain the various theories from the differing "schools" of management.
Describe the impact of ethics in business management.
Describe planning and link it to the controlling process.
Identify various types of management decisions and decision making process.
Identify the various ways an organization can be structured based on the culture and the strategic plan.
Compare and contrast various types of authority (power) and how they are used in an organization.
Describe the role of Human Resource Management (HRM) in an organization.
Summarize the various models of change and describe how they are used by an organization.
Describe some sources of organizational conflict and identify some approaches for reducing the conflict.
Describe various theories on motivation and explain their implications for managers.
Distinguish among various leadership styles and how they impact on the organization's culture.
Describe how various types of groups function in an organization.
Discuss the communication process and describe barriers to communication in an organization.

For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course has final exam at the HCC Testing Center for students in the local region or at a regional institution for remote students. The exam will have a flexible window of time during which it needs to be taken rather than a single date and time.
