BMGT 100 Introduction to Business & Organization (3 credits)

Section N090 meets from January 5 to January 30, 2009

In this course, the student will be able to identify and describe current organizational and management and marketing principles and practices as they are occurring in today's business world. Students will be able to analyze various types of organizations within which they may work and the management problems encountered in these organizations. Students will also recognize changes that are presently occurring in many businesses by watching videos, and reading current business periodicals.

It is strongly recommended that you have regular access to a computer; familiarity with its operating system (Windows 98, Windows XP, etc.); electronic file management skills (use of folders, file compression or zipping, sending and receiving files) before enrolling in this course.

Overall Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Distinguish between different types of economic systems. Discuss the positive and negative aspects of American freeenterprise systems. Contrast a variety of forms of business ownership. Relate the various functions of management to the process of organizing a business. Compare a range of management and leadership styles. Define and explain different personnel policies as they relate to recruiting, hiring, training and evaluating. Identify some current issues in labor unions today. Evaluate diverse forms of shortterm and longterm financing. Explain the marketing process. Summarize the marketing mix, including product strategy, pricing, distribution and promotion of products.

List various problems that businesses encounter in International market.

Course Format

This course:

  • Is not self-paced. You will not be able to access units and activities until the assigned week. The course material is sequential. There is a specific timeline for the completion of each assignment in this class. Quizzes will be available for 1 week, and may not be completed after the deadline. You are expected to check into the course every few days so you will know what is going on, what is due, and see if I have sent you an email (in case there is any modification or clarification to an assignment).
  • Does not require on-campus meetings, except for exams that is taken at the end of the semester, during the week assigned, in the Test Center. (For more information on taking exam, see the "Exam" section below).
    • Does require real-time chats.
    • Some of the types of learning activities or assignments required are:
  • Read chapters in the textbook.
  • Read reference (Power Point Presentations) material which has been provided within the class.
  • Discuss a topic each week with the class.
  • Research various topics on the Internet.
  • Real-time mandatory chats. (The time of the chat will be based on everyone's availability in the class.)

Course Requirements

Quizzes: each consisting of fifteen true/false and multiple choice questions. Various assignments. Tests with true/false, multiple choice, term definition and Case Problem covering all material. At least two consecutive night’s attendance in a formal online group debate.

Business: A Changing World by Ferrell and Hirt, 6th edition, McGrawHill, 2007

Recommended:

At least two 3.5 disks or/and one usb drive. Use them to backup your class files or to keep copies of homework assignments. Buy your textbooks from our online Bookstore, or visit our Bookstore. (Maps)

Exam

For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course has midterm and final exam at the HCC Testing Center for students in the local region or at a regional institution for remote students. The exam will have a flexible window of time during which it needs to be taken rather than a single date and time.
