ARTT 106 - History of Western Architecture I

Course Description

This course will survey the arts of Egypt, the Near East, the Classical Greek and Roman worlds, and Medieval Europe, from about 2500 BC to about 1400 AD. We will consider the great variety and richness of the architecture of these different cultures, and some of the general problems of how art historians understand and write about architecture. You will consider the problems of the social context of architecture; its historical circumstances, context, patronage, the influence of the individual artist, and the role of those who have been the viewers of architecture. You will consider what constitutes understanding and explanation in the history of architecture, and some of the different ways we can approach a work of architecture and grasp its various meanings.

We will spend about half of the course on the ancient world, Greece and Rome, and half on late antiquity and the medieval period; and will look at works of architecture and try to consider all of these works in their physical, historical and social contexts. 

Credits: 3
Prerequisites: Eligible to enroll in ENGL-121. (3 hours weekly)

Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completion this course, the student will be able t

  • Develop the ability to apply a basic knowledge of the vocabulary and terminology of architecture.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use computers as related to the course requirements.
  •  Develop the ability to appreciate artistic expression in its many forms especially architecture.
  •  Develop the confidence in the ability to think and act independently.
  • Develop the ability to manage time to meet goals.
Major Topics
The major course topics are the arts of Egypt, the Near East, the Classical Greek and Roman worlds, and Medieval Europe, from about 2500 BC to about 1400 AD. We will consider the great variety and richness of the architecture of these different cultures, and some of the general problems of how art historians understand and write about architecture. Course Format

  • Is not self-paced.
  • Does not require on-campus meeting, except for two tests that are taken during the week assigned in the Test Center.  (For more information on taking exams, see the  "Exams" section below).
  • Does not requre real-time chats.

Course Requirements

  •  This class is not self-paced. Assignments are designated on a weekly basis with a specific due date assigned.
  •  This class does have required on-campus tests. Two exams, a mid-term and a final exam, will be given at the Howard Community College campus in the Testing Center. Dates and times will be posted.
  • The course material is sequential. Note: This course is sequential in that the students are not able to select the order in which they complete assignments/modules/units/exams.
  • There is a specific timeline for the completion of each assignment in this class. Specific dates are assigned for each assignment.
  • The policy on late assignments is that no late assignments will be accepted. If you are not able to complete the assignment on time, please contact the instructor in advance by sending a message via the course mail.
  • Some of the types of learning activities or assignments that the student will be required to complete are:
  • Read assigned material in the textbook.
  • Read reference material which has been provided within the class.
  • View a movie which has been provided within the class
  • Discuss a topic within the Discussion Board for the class.
  • Write one paper on a specific topic, with the specifications as to length and qualities listed in the course content.
  • Instructions and directions for each assignment will be posted in the specific class modules
  • The calendar will list due dates for papers, group projects, and exams.
  • Exams will not be open book and will be taken on-campus. All exams will be given in the Testing Center at Howard Community College. A student ID must be presented at the time the exam is taken. The exam will be given during a specific time that will be indicated on the course calendar and in the module content. The exam will only be given during the time and date that has been assigned. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!  Failure to complete the mid-term or final exam will result in an “F” grade for the course.

Exams

For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course has a proctored midterm and final exam at the HCC Test Center for students in the local region or at a regional institution for remote students. The exam will have a flexible window of time during which it needs to be taken rather than a single date and time.
