ARTT 104 Art History I -TeleWebThis course is an overview of painting, sculpture, and architecture from the Prehistoric world through the late Medieval period.
This course is Fine Arts and Humanities core course and a Fine Arts, Humanities, and Arts and Sciences elective.
Although the course activities of a TeleWeb course are conducted online, much of the course material is presented through pre-produced telecourse videos. Students will be required to view these videos. Videos are available on HCC TV cablecast or Maryland Public Television broadcast. This course has some videos available via video streaming from the HCC library homepage.

Prerequisites: Eligible to enroll in ENGL-121. (3 hours weekly)

Overall Course Objectives Once you have completed this course you will be able to:
- Develop a better visual understanding of works of art. The student will have learned how to see, how to look, what to look for, and how to analyze what is being visualized.
- Explain the history of works of art that are representative of historical movements.
- Develop a visual ability to recognize the development of naturallism in the history of art.
- Understand the development of art through civilizations.
- Apply learned concepts, within an art historical approach and context, to the visual understanding of works of art in museums.
- Develop an appreciation for art historical works that shall continue in their daily lives--beyond the classroom or college.
- Define and apply the specialized vocabulary used in art history.
- Synthesize and analyze art historical concepts in works of art of the great masters from the past to the present.
- Develop unique art historical concepts based on their individual learning styles and their ability to apply what they have learned by thinking in a critical and methodical manner.
- Demonstrate in their writing personal and aesthetic enrichment.
- Demonstrate in their writing an awareness of art as an important part of their personal heritage.

Course Format - Is not self-paced.
- Does not require on-campus meetings, except for three proctored exams that are taken throughout the semester during the week assigned in the Test Center. (For more information on taking exams, see the "Exams" section below).
- Does not require real-time chats. During optional, weekly chats students have the opportunity to interact with the class and the instructor. (The time of the chat will be based on everyone's availability in the class.)
- This course uses a chronological approach to the history of art of the Prehistoric through Gothic periods.
- Some of the types of learning activities or assignments that the student will be required to complete are:
- Read weekly assigned text pages.
- View lessons each week on HCC-TV or PBS.
- Weekly discussion questions will be posted within the class Bulletin Board. Answers should be posted in the timeframe indicated.

- Grades will be based on 3 exams taken in the HCC Test Center (unless alternate plans are approved by the instructor), a 3-5 page paper based on an independent museum visit, and on the answers to the weekly assignments. Details about the specific structure of that paper are included with the syllabus and other course materials on the course web site.

Exams For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course has three exams at the HCC Test Center for students in the local region or at a regional institution for remote students. The exam will have a flexible window of time during which it needs to be taken rather than a single date and time.
