Description
The overall purpose of this course is to encourage an appreciation of Western Art. This is a highly visual course in which the student will examine and discuss works of art from the prehistoric to the contemporary periods. The student will be looking at and analyzing many images in order to gain an understanding of their form and content. The student will be analyzing the formal structure of various works of art as well as considering them in the context of the historical period and cultural framework in which they were produced. Simple studio projects may be included. Recommended for non-art majors. (3 hours weekly)

Prerequisites: Eligible to enroll in ENGL-121. (3 hours weekly)

Overall Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

- Distinguish the elements and principles of design and explain how they are being used in a given work of art.
- Recognize the material and process involved in the production of a work of art.
- Discuss art in a historical and cultural context.

Required Supplies:
Sketchbook or drawing pad 8” x 10” or 9” x 12” (approximately), tracing paper (optional), drawing pencils (HB, 2B, 4B), eraser, pencil sharpener, ruler, glue stick, scissors, magazines for collage, 1 piece of poster-board (minimum 10” x 16”), paintbrush, small set of tempera paints or poster paints (minimum colors: red, yellow, blue)
Printmaking supplies: 4” x 4” plywood, carpet padding, waterproof glue, small paint roller or sponge brush. For this assignment, you may wish to look at the instructions before you buy anything. You may substitute “fun foam” or other spongy material or even a potato (if you are comfortable carving with a knife) for the carpet padding.
