FAQs for Supplemental Users of CE 6

Q: What is CE 6?
A: CE 6 is the acronym for Blackboard Campus Edition 6, a popular Course Management System (CMS)

A CMS (sometimes called a Learning Mangement System or LMS) provides a platform on which faculty and others can develop password-protected course web sites by using tools that are already in place on the site. The faculty member needs only learn how to use the tools on the site to post his or her course materials, use the assessment tools, the assignment drop box and gradebook, among other tools offered in the CMS.

BTW, Blackboard bought WebCT and renamed the WebCT product Campus Edition 6, so you will sometimes see references to WebCT in the resource materials.

Q: How do I log on to CE 6?
A: The CE 6 log on page is http://ce6.howardcc.edu.

A link to the log on page is posted on must HCC homepages and on the HCC Intranet.
Once you have been assigned a course and section and your course site has been created on CE 6, you can Log In. Your username is your HCC express username and your password is your seven digit HCC employee id number. If you do not know your employee id number, please ask a division office staff member to look it up for you. Once you have logged in, you will see all your CE 6 course sites listed on one page called your “My Courses” page.

Q: How do I get a supplemental site on CE 6 for my F2F course?
A: It’s easy.

Once you know what course and what section of that course you are teaching, let your division office staff know that you would like the course/section designated in Colleague as using CE 6 (WebCT). Based on this informatiom, we will create a blank course "shell" for your course. We create these course shells on a continuous basis, so your shell should be ready for you within 24 hours of its designation in Colleague.

Q: What do I do with this blank "shell"?
A:  Each semester, we create blank shells for those course sections that are designated in Colleague.

When you first click to enter this new course shell, you are given three options: (1) to keep the site as a blank so you can build your course, (2) to import content from one of your other CE 6 courses, or (3) to import a zip of a course on the old WebCT 4 server.

We have posted two viewlets on the Distance Learning Homepage under the Faculty Resources link. One viewlet shows how to copy content from an already-existing CE 6 course into a new course shell. Another viewlet shows how to export a course from WebCT 4 and import it into CE 6.

Q: What if I already have taught using CE 6 and I want a copy of my previous semester's course? How do I get my content from into a new course shell?
A: When you first log on to your new course shell, you will be prompted to copy content. The process is easy and intuitive.

However, if you need help with this process, watch the viewlet on the Distance Learning homepage. Click on the Faculty Resources link on the left and then on “How to Copy Content into New Course Shell” link under the CE 6 heading.

Q: How do I learn to use CE 6?
A: You have several options.

Depending on your needs, you can learn it on your own, using the HELP feature in CE 6 or you can learn at your own page through a brief online course called Getting Started.
It takes a couple of hours and it familiarizes you with the interface, the major design features, and teaching tools in CE 6. Contact your liaison if you would like to be entered in this course.

Each division also has a CE 6 "liaison" who is designated by the division chair as the CE 6 specialist for the division to help answer questions and support supplemental users of CE 6.

Q: How do my students learn to use CE 6 tools?
A: We have created a “Student Guide to CE 6” site.

We have posted a “Student Guide to CE 6” that provides instruction on how to use the tools in CE 6. Log in information is posted on the main CE 6 log on page at http://ce6.howardcc.edu. Links and log in information are also posted on the Distance Learning Homepage.

Students can access this Student Guide by using the following:
Username: sample
Password: student

On your course site, please post instructions for how your students can access this Orientation.

Although it is designed for students, you might find it useful, too.

Q: When are students populated in course sites?
A: The first global population of students into courses takes place the week before classes begin.

The first global population takes place two or three days before classes begin. We do this so you can check your sites ahead of time to make sure that the students are populated and you are ready to go for your orientations and/or the first day of the semester.

Q: How often are students populated into courses?
A: Student population into course sites is automated and takes place every two hours.

Q: Does this automated population also remove students who have dropped?
A: Yes. Students who have dropped your course will still be on unenrolled from your course site. At the end of the Withdrawal period, we also unenroll those students who withdraw.
