Margaret R. ArmitageMargaret R. Armitage
M.S. St. Bonaventure University
Peggy Armitage is Professor of Psychology and Human Development. In addition to her teaching and clinical counseling expertise, she has over twenty-five years of experience in leadership and communications training for business and government organizations. She is also a certified counselor and has served on numerous health advisory boards in Howard County.

Susan R. BardSusan R. Bard
M.S. University of Maryland
Sue Bard, Professor of Biology, has a passion for biology and teaching. In addition to teaching general biology, microbiology, and genetics, she developed the seminar concept that is used in the Schoenbrodt Honors Program. Professor Bard oversees a curriculum that reflects the very latest developments in the fields of biology and genetics. She is a firm believer in the importance of students being exposed to the latest and most current scientific literature. Professor Bard continues to be a leader in the area of teaching that maximizes student learning and enthusiasm for the biological sciences.

Barbara BrickmanBarbara Brickman
M.A. University of Maryland
Barbara Brickman is an assistant professor of Arts and Humanities. Professor Brickman has performed extensively in the Baltimore-Washington area including the Folger Shakespeare Theatre and Rep Stage. In her honors section of Humanities through the Arts, she explores the humanities through film, dance, music, literature, photography, painting, theatre, sculpture and architecture. She is an ardent advocate for all of the arts and believes that lifelong learning is the key to a more profound enjoyment of life.

William BrownWilliam Brown

Dr. Bill Brown, Professor of Chemistry, has twelve years of chemical research experience in addition to his teaching experience. He teaches inorganic and organic chemistry and he teaches the Chemistry 101 Honors Seminar that focuses on advances and developments in chemistry and technology, environmental issues, and how these impact on our everyday lives. The highly interactive nature of the seminar gives the student the opportunity to delve into some of the most recent and important issues of the present.

Barbara G. CooperBarbara G. Cooper

Ph.D. candidate, University of Maryland
Barbara Cooper, Professor of English, is a writing expert. She has coordinated HCC's freshman composition and writing intensive programs, given presentations at professional conferences and worked as a technical writer and editor. She teaches composition, technical writing and American literature. In her English 121 honors class, students develop a critical consciousness as both readers and writers, doing so by examining a specific and challenging moment in American history.

Brian E. GrayBrian E. Gray
M.A. University of Montana
Brian Gray, Professor of Mathematics, has more than 28 years of experience teaching mathematics. He lectures with an active approach, through group collaboration and discovery-based learning, which facilitates greater participation by everyone in the class. He is coauthoring three activity-based algebra textbooks in the Mathematics in Action series.

Vladimir G. MarinichVladimir G. Marinich

Vladimir Marinich is Professor of Social Sciences and Director of the Schoenbrodt Honors Program. He is the author of several articles on religion in Russia, edited two historical readers, and has developed study guides for students in several history classes. He has also received the Social Science Outstanding Teacher Award.

Helen Buss MitchellHelen Buss Mitchell

Ph.D. University of Maryland

Dr. Helen Mitchell is Professor of Philosophy. Her approach in her Philosophy 101 Honors course is to have honors students experience a very interactive discussion/seminar, where students actually lead a class session based on reflective thinking that emphasizes each student's own analysis. Dr. Mitchell's impressive experience includes authoring numerous publications, speaking on women's issues, and publishing readers on history and the Holocaust with her husband, Joe Mitchell.

Jean Sonntag

Jean Sonntag, Master Adjunct Professor of English, had 25 years experience writing and teaching writing for the U.S. government before devoting herself to her real passion-teaching college composition and literature. Named the English/Foreign Language Division's Outstanding Adjunct Faculty of the Year, she has developed innovative honors offerings focusing on Cultural Identity and the Asian American Experience and on Southern Crime. She also teaches the English and American literature survey courses online.

Patricia J. TurnerPatricia J. Turner
M.S. Towson University
Patricia Turner, Professor of Anatomy/Physiology, teaches the Biology 204 Honors seminar. In this seminar, students apply their physiology knowledge to patient case studies and research problems. The students who complete the seminar gain valuable experience in integrating the facts of physiology, solving quantitative problems, making qualitative predictions and leading discussions with other students.
