Online Student Field Experience Instructions

The 15 hours of field experience must be successfully completed in order to pass this course. Placements will be provided in a Howard County public school. In order to receive your placement you must complete the following.
First and foremost, you must log onto Canvas to begin your online course.
If you need assistance logging on, follow "this link" on the HCC website for instructions, or contact your instructor. As you are aware from the course description in the HCC Schedule of Classes, both EDUC-200 and EDUC-260 require a 15-hour Field Experience to pass each course.
As an online student, we ask that you complete the following. You will not be allowed to begin your observation hours until all of the following has been completed.
One of the following documents must be returned to your instructor by the end of the first week of the semester. It can be dropped off to your instructor in the Social Sciences/Teacher Education Division Office (ST-149, put instructor's name on receipt) or mailed to (Instructor’s Name, Howard Community College, Department of Teacher Education/ST-149, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, MD 21044).
Application for Field Experience Placement. Print and complete Parts I and II.
Placement in K-12 School of Employment Letter (for students already employed in a MSDE-accredited public or private school).
Print all of the following items and submit by the end of the first month of the semester to your instructor. Once you have read and signed each, return the original copy to the instructor by dropping off to the Social Sciences/Teacher Education Division Office (ST-149, put instructor's name on receipt) or mailing (Instructor's Name, Howard Community College, Department of Teacher Education/ST-149, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, MD 21044).
Criminal History Disclosure Statement. This form is required by the Howard County Public School System and must be notarized. There is a free notary service at the Welcome Desk in the RCF (bookstore) building at HCC. The HCC notaries require a valid driver's license or MVA photo ID in order to notarize your form.
**Professional Behavior Agreement**. This form is required by HCC. Please read the expectations for your behavior while you are observing in the classroom before you sign this document.
**Confidentiality Agreement**. This form is required by HCC. Please read the ethical behaviors that you are expected to adhere to before you sign this document.
NOTE: The Social Sciences/Teacher Education Division Office is open Monday-Thursday from 9:00 A.M. - 8:00 P.M., and Friday from 9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.
Please follow these specific directions for completing the Field Experience Forms:
|Application for Field Experience Placement|
You need to complete Part I – Student Information. For EDUC-200 students, please request an Elementary, Middle or High School Special Education placement in the Grade Level section in your order of preference. For EDUC-260 students, you can request a grade or content area (ex. Secondary Math) in your order of preference. Please be specific on days and times available for observation. Mail or drop-off the Application for Field Experience Placement form to your instructor at HCC by the end of the first week of the semester. Make a copy of this and all of the required forms to keep for yourself.

|If you currently work in an accredited K-12 school, you can arrange to do your 15-hour placement at your school. However, you must have a school administrator sign the Placement in School of Employment Letter agreeing to this, and mail or drop off to your instructor at HCC within the first week of class.|
2. & 3.
|Professional Behavior Agreement and Confidentiality Agreement|
Sign each of these forms and mail or drop off to your instructor at HCC by the end of the first month of the semester. You may not begin your observations until these forms have been returned to your instructor.
|Criminal History Disclosure Statement|
You MUST complete the Criminal History Disclosure Statement Form and return it to your HCC instructor by the end of the first month of the semester. This form must be notarized. The Welcome and Information Desk in the Student Services Building has notaries available to notarize the form free-of-charge when you present your valid driver’s license or MVA photo I.D. card.

|Teacher Education Field Experience Student Emergency Card|
You must also complete the Emergency Card, and give it to the School Secretary on your first field experience visit.

|Field Experience Documentation Form|
Your 15-hours of required field experience must be recorded on this form. Print the form out and take it to your placement school each time you visit. Have the cooperating teacher sign it each time you observe. When your 15-hours have been completed, mail it to your instructor (Instructor's Name, Howard Community College, Department of Teacher Education/ST-149, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, MD 21044) or drop it off to your instructor in the Social Sciences/Teacher Education Division Office (ST-149, put instructor's name on receipt). Your instructor will let you know the date by which your field experience must be completed. Failure to turn in this form will prevent you from passing the course.
This observation is a very important requirement of your course, so please complete the Field Experience Forms by the requested date. This will ensure that your placement will be assigned and e-mailed to you promptly. I hope that your 15-hour field experience is interesting and educational. Your online instructor will e-mail your placement and provide instructions for contacting your cooperating teacher.
