Enrichment Experiences

Community Based Sites:  Ambulatory Care

TOTAL HEALTH CARE CLINICS, Baltimore County
NU 202  - Day placements only

Division Center:  Take I-95 North and get off on the Martin Luther King Boulevard exit.  Take a left on Pennsylvania Avenue and look for Moser Street, where you will turn right.   At the next street, turn left on Division Street.   The agency is on the right side at 1501 Division Street.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in outpatient care at the following facilities:

Pediatrics:  Approximately 2-3,000 visits per month, ranging from well-child exams to immunizations to sick child care.

OB/Gyn:  Approximately 3,000 visits per month, which include routine and high-risk OB (the latter only available on Monday & Friday), women's health, and cancer screening. The center is staffed by RNs, nurse practitioners, and midwives.

Internal Medicine:  A large number of visits per month with RNs serving as triage nurses in addition to routine duties.  Physicians' assistants on site.

HARBOR FAMILY CARE CLINICS, Baltimore County 
NU 202 - Day and evening placements

From I-95 North, take exit 57 (Hanover Street South).  Cross over the bridge, go through one stop light, turn left on Cherry Hill Road, and then turn right into the parking lot.  Proceed through the lot to the south end of the building.

2900 South Hanover Street facility:

OB/Gyn (day placement):  A wide variety of women's health care available.  On Wednesday,  the clinic focuses on teen OB patients (midwife and full range of counselors available).

Pediatrics (placement):  Well-child assessments, immunizations, sick-child visits

Internal Medicine (pending approval)(placement):  A wide variety of cases.

1200 South Hanover and West Street facility:

Day students:  Pediatrics and internal medicine from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays; Pediatrics on Wednesday evenings from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Students:  Monday from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., split between pediatrics and internal medicine; internal medicine on Tuesdays from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.

ASSOCIATION FOR RETARDED CITIZENS OF HOWARD COUNTY GROUP HOMES, Howard County
NU 202 - Evening placements only

Get on Route 29 South and take the Shaker/Seneca Drive exit.  At the stop sign, take a left on Shaker Lane.   At the four way stop sign, turn left on Seneca Drive.  Turn right on Allview Drive and take the next right on Beechwood.  It's the second house on your right:  6506 Beechwood.

Students will participate in the care of retarded individuals within a residential living situation with an RN preceptor.  Each person has complex health needs requiring skilled care (i.e., trache care, GT feedings, splints, respiratory treatments, range of motion).  Holistic care involves all aspects of the rehabilitation process.


LONG TERM CARE - ASSISTED LIVING:

HARMONY HALL - MARYLAND HELPING HANDS, Howard County
NU 202 - Day and evening placement

From Little Patuxent Parkway, turn left on Cedar Lane, and proceed through the light at Owen Brown Road. Turn right immediately after passing Lorien Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Students will have the opportunity to work with the RN who acts in the following capacities:

Care manager, supervisor for ancillary staff, assessment and intervention to maintain health status, referrals to interdisciplinary care providers, administration of injectable medications, and documentation.

VANTAGE HOUSE, Howard County
NU 202 - Day placement only

Turn right on Little Patuxent Parkway.  Pass the Columbia Mall and turn right on Vantage Point Road, then right into the parking area.

Students will have the opportunity to work with an RN who performs health assessments, provides preventative measures, and makes referrals for episodic health needs.  Opportunities to participate in health care clinic activities may also be available with permission of the visiting physician. Interdisciplinary meetings are held on Thursdays from 10:00 to 12:00 p.m.

SUNRISE OF COLUMBIA, Howard County 
NU 202 - Day placement only

Exit the main entrance of HCC.  Turn left on Little Patuxent Parkway.  Turn left at Cedar Lane.  At the second light, turn left onto Freetown Road.  Follow the signs to Sunrise.

Students will have an RN as guide and wellness nurse,who will focus on assessment and prevention. Teaching and staff supervision will be emphasized.  Interdisciplinary communication is a part of daily activities.   Hours exten from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

LONG TERM CARE - REHABILITATION/SUBACUTE SITES:

LORIEN - MEDICAL SPECIALTY UNIT, Howard County 
NU 202 - Day and Evening placements

From HCC, turn left on Little Patuxent Parkway.   At the light, turn left on Cedar Lane.   At the second light, look for the Lorien Nursing and Rehab Center sign on your right.

Student experiences will be on the subacute unit, focusing on client rehabilitation.  Approximately 90 percent of clients are discharged to home or assisted-living facilities.  Out of a population of approximately 30 clients, 15-18 are acutely ill and require more intensive nursing care.  Client care focuses on orthopedics, chronic disease, and trauma rehabilitation.  Some individuals are on ventilators.

DEATON SPECIALTY HOSPITAL, Baltimore County
NU 202 - Day and evening placements

Take I-95 North to the exit for Route 395.  Follow signs for the Inner Harbor.   At the first light, turn right on Conway Street.  Go three blocks and turn right at the light onto Light Street.  Go one block and turn right onto Lee Street.  The parking garage will be on your left.   The next block is South Charles Street.

Students will have the opportunity to select from several types of units:

Subacute Care:
One unit specializes in the care of orthopedic rehabilitation and long-term IV management of infection.  The average stay is 60 days, with most clients discharged to home or assisted-living arrangements.

Rehabilitation:
An adjoining unit manages the care of patients with chronic/comatose conditions, including trache care and various medical treatments.  Another unit works with traumatic brain injury and involves communication skills, behavior modification, and psychiatric interventions.

LEVINDALE-HEBREW GERIATRIC CENTER & HOSPITAL, Baltimore County 
NU 202 - Day and evening placements

Take Route 29 north to I-70, which merges onto the Baltimore Beltway.  Take the beltway toward Towson and exit onto I-83 toward Baltimore.  Off of I-83, take the Northern Parkway exit.  Proceed through the light at Greenspring Avenue and turn left at the light onto West Belvedere.  Levindale will be on your right.  Park in the staff lot.

Students will have the opportunity to focus on rehabilitative or subacute care at these facilities:

Subacute Care:
Two units (total capacity of 30 patients) focus on the care of orthopedic patients and CVA patients.  Patients require multiple interventions.   Selected patients are presented in interdisciplinary rounds.

Rehabilitation:
This unit treats a wide variety of patients, including post-MI, cardiac, stroke, and orthopedic rehabilitation. Interdisciplinary discharge planning rounds are held on Tuesdays for each patient.

SINAI REHABILITATION PROGRAM, Baltimore County 
NU 202 - Day placements only

Take Route 29 north to I-70, which merges onto the Baltimore Beltway.  Take the beltway toward Towson and exit onto I-83 toward Baltimore.  Off of I-8, take the Northern Parkway exit.  Proceed through the light and turn left at the light onto Greenspring Avenue.  Park in the staff lot.  Cross the pedestrian bridge to the hospital.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in patient care experiences in three different units that each have a unique focus:

Mt. Pleasant Traumatic Brain Injury Unit
Patients in this unit have had recent head trauma and are in the process of relearning skills and rehabilitating themselves to accommodate their ADL's.  Cognitive training is also provided, including intensive work with families.   Many specialties are involved.

Mt. Pleasant - Neurologic Rehabilitation Unit
Patients in this unit have experienced a neurologic insult from a CVA, multiple sclerosis, or some form of cancer.  A wide variety of therapies are used with an interdisciplinary approach.

Blaustein - Rehabilitation Center
This unit rehabilitates a wide variety of patients who have had cardiac insults, amputations, lung transplants, and other conditions.  Various specialties are involved.

BRYNMAR UNIT - MARYLAND GENERAL HOSPITAL, Baltimore County
NU 202 - Day placements only

Take I-95 North to Route 395 (exit 53).  Take Martin Luther King Boulevard North.  Turn right on Linden Avenue.  (You have gone one block too far if you get to Howard Street.)  Park in the visitors parking lot and look for the high rise on your right.

Sierra Group
Consists primarily of clients who have experienced orthopedic trauma/surgery, CVAs, and amputations with occasional admissions for long-term disease (i,e., multiple sclerosis).  Intensive therapy and teaching is the focus of care with patients, who are encouraged to be active throughout the day.

Head Trauma Unit
Located in the adjoining area, this unit offers similar therapy and teaching schedules but focuses more on the relearning of ADL's and cognitive training.

HARBOR HOSPITAL (Extended Care Facility), Baltimore County
NU 202 - Day and evening placements

Take I-95 north toward Baltimore.   Exit on South Hanover Street.  Cross Veterans Memorial Bridge and turn left on Cherry Tree Drive.  Go through the stop light and park inthe general parking area on the left side.  Go to the main entrance and proceed to the fifth floor.  Follow signs to the unit.

The focus of thi unit is subacute rehabilitation.  Patient stay averages around 16 day, and most are discharged to a home or assisted-living environment.  Most residents are over 65 years of age, but a few younger residents are experiencing the need for long-term antibiotic therapy.  The patient needs primarily revolve around orthopedic, post-CVA, cardiac, or post-op rehabilitation.  Some ventilator-dependent patients are admitted to the unit.  Wound care is a frequent need.
