Nursing - Campus LabsThe nursing skills lab plays an important role in preparing students for practical, on-the-job scenarios after graduation, with activities that promote psychomotor and critical thinking skills. Upon entering the nursing program, students purchase a clinical textbook to be used as their skills reference, and once in class, they receive their own "skills sets," which identify the skills to be learned by a designated date. The skills identified in a particular skill set relate to the theory content under discussion that week. Requirements of the skills set may include readings in the clinical skills book, videotapes, and/or interactive videos. The criteria for successfully demonstrating the skills are included in the skills set packet. Individualized practice is encouraged and guided practice sessions are provided.
The skills are practiced and evaluated in the nursing skills lab under the supervision of the skills lab instructors. Students attend a required skills demonstration prior to completing the skills set requirements. They have the opportunity to ask questions, practice, and seek additional assistance before their evaluations (specific times posted at the beginning of the semester). Students are also encouraged to practice psychomotor skills in the skills lab as often as necessary to feel confident. Skills are evaluated by live performance.
The Nursing Study Lab, adjacent to the skills labs, is equipped with twenty computer stations and a number of programs, including tutorials, case studies, and practice examinations available on the hard drives. Audiovisual equipment (televisions, VCRs, and audiotape players) and twelve study carrels are also available for the students' convenience.
Our hours of operation extend from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, the Skills Lab is open from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
