SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM
BENEFITS TO STUDENTS
- Increased verbal ability
- Experience to add to your professional development and resume
- The opportunity to learn and receive credit outside of the college environment
- Knowledge and connection to Latino culture
- The great feeling you get knowing that you are giving your time and energy to programs that need and appreciate you!
WORKLOAD AND COURSE CREDITStudents must volunteer a mininum of 12 hours in the semester (approximately one hour a week over ten weeks). Your duties may include helping Latino students with their classwork and homework; tutoring in reading, math, computers, music, and other subjects; helping organize activities with arts and crafts, music, or games; mentoring; reading to children; and other varied activities.
Most of your duties will be accomplished in English, but you are expected to converse some of the time in Spanish with your partners and other students, teachers, and volunteers. Plus, you will be hearing Spanish all around you. You will have many opportunities to use your language skills, but remember, the amount of Spanish you use depends on YOU!!!
Your lab class grade will be strongly based upon your attendance and participation with your service organization. You will also follow up with frequent journal entries that not only convey the details of your experience but allow you to keep track of what you are learning in Spanish. At the end of the semester, you will give a short oral presentation in Spanish and English to the HCC Service Learning Lab group about your experience.
