In ENGL-097, instructors use a variety of approaches to get their students to provide constructive feedback regarding their peer's work. One of the more successful strategies we have adopted comes from a video entitled Beginning Writing Groups. The Beginning Writing Groups (BWG) video is a student demonstration of how to peer edit. There are three steps involved: two readings and a response period. In the video, two separate groups model the approach. At the end of the video, students and teacher provide additional suggestions. The entire video lasts between 40-50 minutes. There are two copies of the BWG video in the library. It is shared with other divisions across the campus. How Can I Obtain a Copy?Copies of the video can be obtained by checking out copies of the video from the library. It is best to request the videos early since other instructors will want to use the video as well. Occasionally, a member from the English division will reserve a copy of the video and keep it in the English/Math division office (HR 300). In this case, faculty are asked to “check the videos out” from one of the receptionists. When Should I Show the Video in My Class?Although the generic calendar stipulates a particular time to watch the video (usually around the third week in the semester), some instructors choose to show the video and have students to model the approach much later in the semester once students have become more comfortable with critiquing their peers’ works and having their own works critiqued by their peers. Again, this is only one model out of many. Use the model that you and your students feel most comfortable with. |
