Amelia co-developed the intensive ESL program at Iowa Western Community College and taught ESL there full-time for four years. In 2002, she joined the full-time faculty at Howard Community College where she has mainly taught ESL, developmental writing, and college-level composition. In her teaching, she especially enjoys getting students from a variety of cultural backgrounds together for discussions and peer review sessions in the classroom and over the Internet using web-conferencing technology. Through her teaching, she promotes the importance of self-understanding in combination with investigation of other cultures.

Amelia has taught English in Nicaragua as part of the USAID Nicaragua Peace Scholarship Program; in Cuernavaca, Mexico at Universidad Internacional; and in Cali, Colombia at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. She helped start the Conversation Partners Program at HCC, which combines efforts with the English Language Institute and the Service Learning Program. She is actively involved in internationalizing the curricula at HCC as a member of the Global Curriculum Team. She is also a Step-Up coach.
