Time required: This course takes about 40 hours to complete, depending upon your computer knowledge and ability to learn computer concepts. Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course, but being able to type is necessary. You don't have to be a speed typist, but if you can't type at least 30 words per minute, you will have problems completing the tests on time. CMSY-110 Software Applications for Micros – Microsoft Office 3 credits (open-entry format) In this introductory course, topics covered are Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and an overview of Windows. This course is an overview; you will not be learning the details of the various, specific software features. This is a good class if you can type but have little or no knowledge of computers and want to explore what these popular programs can do. If you want to gain computer skills to use on the job, however, this may not be the best choice for you. You would be better prepared if you took CMSY-101 Beginning Spreadsheets, CMSY-102 Beginning Word Processing, CMSY-103 Beginning Databases, and CMSY116 PowerPoint. Time Required: As this is a 3-credit course, expect to spend a minimum of 120 hours of preparatory work (more or less, depending upon your computer experience). Although the name of this class makes it sound like a good first computer course, IT ISN'T. If you are new to computers, you should consider taking CMSY-102, Beginning Word Processing, which is the most basic computer course that teaches you a practical skill while you also learn how to use the basic features of Windows. This Windows course can be very difficult to understand without first having some understanding of what your computer can do and why the topics you learn in this class are important. OFFI-100 Office Machines 1 credit (open-entry format) In this course, you will learn how to use a business calculator to add, subtract, multiply, and divide; use whole numbers and fractions; do accumulative/constant multiplication and division; calculate percentages, complements, chain discounts, gross and net profit, mark up, and proration; and work through interest problems. Emphasis is placed on the ability to use a calculator to complete business math problems. There is no homework assigned for this course. You just keep on practicing, and when you feel comfortable with the material, take a test. There are five tests. OFFI-102 Editing Skills 3 credits (open-entry format) In this course,you will improve your proofreading and spelling skills and develop a business vocabulary. This will include learning proofreading techniques, capitalization, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and word usage principles. An intensive study of spelling rules is included. This course does not take the place of an English course. It is a review (brush-up) of previously acquired skills. This is a difficult course that requires a lot of detailed paperwork. If you have a weak vocabulary and poor spelling skills, you may find this course too hard to handle. If you don't like detail work, you may find this course hard to pass. Time Required: As this is a 3-credit course, it takes about 125 hours to complete. No computers are used; you can do the book work anywhere. Note: Expect a lot of homework. OFFI-280 Legal Transcription and Terminology 3 credits (open-entry format) In this legal transcription and terminology course, you will use a transcription machine to type legal documents and correspondence from prerecorded dictation. Also included is an overview of legal procedures and an in-depth study of terminology. Time Required: This course takes about 120 hours to complete, depending upon your typing speed and editing abilities. Prerequisite: OFFI-281, Legal Document Preparation. This course may be completed in fewer than 14 weeks and started at any time during the fall, winter, and spring semesters. Approximately 50 percent of the work may be done outside of class if you have Microsoft Word software. The transcription tapes are copyrighted and may not be duplicated or taken out of the classroom. OFFI-281 Legal Document Preparation 2 credits (open-entry format) In this course, you will prepare various legal forms and documents from the following areas: contracts, automobile negligence, civil actions, partnerships, corporations, wills and probate, criminal actions, real estate, and bankruptcy. In addition, you will study legal terminology and procedures. You will use Microsoft Word to prepare the legal documents accurately and in an acceptable format. Time Required: This course takes about 80 hours to complete. Prerequisite: CMSY-104, Advanced Word Processing. This legal document preparation course may be completed in fewer than 14 weeks and may be started at any time during fall, winter, and spring semesters. If you are a poor speller or have trouble memorizing words and definitions, you will have trouble with this course as you can't just read the chapter once and take a test. You must spend at least five hours a week studying and practicing words and definitions. OFFI-290 may be completed in fewer than 14 weeks and started at any time during the fall, winter, and spring semesters.
