FAQs on Accounting

FAQ 1   Are there prerequisites for the basic Principles of Accounting courses at Howard Community College?

Answer:  There is no prerequisite for ACCT-111. The completion of ACCT-111 is the prerequisite for ACCT-112.

FAQ 2   Can a student who takes or needs to take remedial English/math and lacks stated prerequisites still be successful?

Answer:  Not usually. A study conducted over five courses of ACCT-111, representing two day and three night sections (equal numbers of students aged under and over 21) showed the following:

  • Completion of college algebra (any time, any college)... 88 percent success.*
  • Completion of a college-level literature or speech course... 85 percent success.*
  • Prior experience in accounting or in a business related to accounting, coupled with a limited number of credits (six or fewer)... 88 percent success.*
  • All other factors such as interest, lower-level English/math, bookkeeping in high school... 0 percent success.*

*Success was defined as a "C" or higher.  The "D" grade was not considered success in this study.

Accounting requires the solving of problems involving unknown quantities or dollars.  It also demands interpretation from "word" or written information to set up a solution. Apparently, most students can overcome the lack of either adequate math or adequate English, but not both.

FAQ 3   In general, who studies accounting?

Answer:  Accounting is required for all business degrees; some students study it, therefore, because it is "required."

A second, and significant, percentage of students come to school from jobs where the importance and significance of accounting have become obvious; they wish to better understand, interpret, and evaluate financial results, while learning how to make projections from the financial information generated by their business's systems.

Finally, a smaller group of students has discovered that they like accounting as it is applied in the "real world" and wish to make a career change to become a CPA.

Because of the number of students in the second two groups, there are no prerequisites for ACCT-111.

FAQ 4   Is the study of the course issues similar to the "real world" applications of careers in accounting?

Answer:  Only minimally. The course itself teaches the underlying conventions, assumptions, methods, and techniques applied to accounting information.
