TLI Ethics - Proposal of Steering Committee
Proposal of the Ethics across the
Curriculum Steering Committee
In an effort to strengthen HCC’s commitment to the ethical development of our students, the Ethics across the Curriculum Steering Committee proposes that we integrate an ethics component into our core courses.
Here is a possible statement to express that commitment:
Howard Community College recognizes that the development of ethical judgment is an integral part of education as well as a vital contributor to a healthy society. In order to encourage the campus community to discover and explore ethical theories and issues in the disciplines and ethical concerns in our daily lives, the college supports the integration of ethics-based learning into our core curriculum.
Ethical judgment can be defined and explored in various ways. Examples are
Showing knowledge of what ethics is
Recognizing that an ethical issue is at stake
Applying this knowledge to concrete cases and issues
Applying this knowledge to academic integrity
Developing the ability to make ethical decisions through responsible reflection
[This proposal is inspired, in part, by a similar commitment to ethical development at Clemson University and by the findings of a 2004 study, conducted by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, which revealed that students view “values, principles, and ethics” among the least valued outcomes of their education.]
