Black Is… Black Ain’t
The film by filmmaker Marlon Riggs followed by a discussion

Riggs uses his grandmother's gumbo as a metaphor for the rich diversity of Black identities. His camera traverses the country, bringing us face to face with Black folks young and old, rich and poor, rural and urban, gay and straight, grappling with the paradox of numerous, often contested definitions of Blackness. Riggs mixes performances by choreographer Bill T. Jones and poet Essex Hemphill with commentary by noted cultural critics Angela Davis, Bell Hooks, Cornel West, Michele Wallace, Barbara Smith and Maulana Karenga to create a stew of personal testimony, music, and history

Rastafarian Culture Presentation
From Back ‘o Wall to the Smithsonian: Overstanding Rastafari in the 21st Century”. This presentation, by Dr. Jake Homiak of the Smithsonian’s Department of Anthropology, will provide an in-depth look at the transition of Rastafari from a marginalized Afrocentric movement in colonial Jamaica to a global network of universal affiliation in the 21st century.  Based on his 30 years of work with Rastafari in Jamaica, and across the Caribbean, Homiak will provide insights into the origins of the ideology and social practices of the movement as well as the nature of its international spread. In dealing with Rastafari globalization, attention is given to the little understood relationship between reggae music (and Rastafari as a form of popular culture) and the deeper African roots of Rastafari and the religiosity of its Elders. Jake Homiak is the Curator of “Discovering Rastafari” in the African Voices Hall, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.
