Course Description-10.03.01A. Common Course Outlines
Every course taught at Howard Community College will have a common course outline listing the description, overall course objectives, major topics, and course requirements and other course information common to every section. To assist students these course outlines will be maintained on a continual basis for courses currently offered or planned to be offered and shall be made available to students prior to enrollment. Enrollment shall be construed to include orientation, pre-registration, and actual registration. The syllabus for each faculty teaching the course must correspond to the information included in the common course outline.
| 1. | The course description will be a one-paragraph description of the course in behavioral terms as it will appear in the catalogue. Prerequisites or co-requisites are to be stated in the course description. |
| 2. | The overall course objectives will be written in behavioral terms describing what the student will be able to do when he or she finishes the course. |
| 3. | It is the responsibility of the faculty to review and update course outlines and submit them to the division chair, or their designee, as necessary on a yearly basis. |
B. Course Syllabus
The course syllabus should describe the course fully enough to allow a prospective student to determine the general content and the methodology used. Each instructor’s course syllabus, in addition to the elements of the common course outline, will include a detailed orientation of the course describing the instructional strategies used, the evaluation and grading procedures, texts and materials required, attendance policy, and any other requirements.
C. Availability of Course Outlines
The up-to-date versions of all course outlines will be available on the college’s website and in the admissions office. In addition, each academic division office will maintain a compilation of paper copies of the up-to-date versions of the courses offered through that division.
