Curriculum Terminology-10.01.01A. Credit - the award granted for completing a course, expressed in hours. The unit of credit at Howard Community College is the semester hour. A credit is a minimum of 750 minutes of instructional activity. Lab or studio credit is described as 1500 to 2250 minutes of instructional process. Alternate instructional strategies, i.e., online telecourses are based on equivalent outcomes in student learning. All satisfactorily completed work at Howard Community College is awarded credit. Degree credit is that which may be counted toward the associate degree, whether occupational or transfer.
B. Section - a group of students scheduled for a particular course. Section numbers are a method of identifying a specific classroom group when multiple groups of the same course are being conducted.
C. Subject - an academic or technical discipline or portion thereof that can be appropriately presented in a course sequence (i.e., mathematics, computer-aided design, etc.).
D. Course - the basic unit of instruction that is offered within a given period of time and for which credit toward graduation, certification, workforce training, or to fulfill some other student goal is usually given (i.e., general psychology).
E. Curriculum - a body of courses required for a certificate, degree, or diploma, or constituting a major field of study (i.e., office technology).
