Emergency Information and ClosingsHCC is operating on a normal schedule. Flu Information Cases of the H1N1, or swine flu, virus have been reported around the country including Maryland. In the U.S., the illness has been relatively mild. But because flu strains are difficult to predict, we wanted to let you know that HCC is working to stay on top of the situation. The college is part of an extensive emergency preparedness network in Howard County. The Howard County Health Department has a detailed plan for dealing with this type of health emergency and is providing excellent information. We urge you to visit www.hchealth.org or call the Flu Hotline at 410-313-6503. Students should regularly check their college email for updates and messages. At this point, health officials recommend that people take the same precautions for this Swine Flu as would be taken for any other type of influenza prevention. Recommendations are: · Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. · Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective. · Cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. · Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. · Try to avoid close contact with sick people. · If you get the flu, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. Symptoms of Swine Flu include: · Fever/chills · Headache · Cough · Sore throat · Muscle / body aches · Fatigue · Vomiting and/or diarrhea We will keep you informed as the situation develops. |
