October 19, 2012 Columbia, Maryland — Howard Community College’s (HCC) Kids on Campus (KOC) summer program was named “Best Summer Camp” in Maryland Family Magazine’s 2012 readers’ choice poll taken earlier this month. KOC is joined by honorable mentions including Abrakadoodle, Arabesque Dance Studio and Columbia Association camps. Introduced in 1986 as a one-day program for middle school students, the program enrolled 1,621 participants this past summer, and has evolved into a cultural hub of learning and activity for the college’s office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. Growing to include elementary and high school ages, students can now enroll in classes that feature academics, career paths, the arts, sports and mechanics. Each year new ideas are generated for fresh KOC courses, such as duct tape art, by teachers in the program and parents of enrolled students.
