Released September 4, 2009 (Columbia, MD) – Making the transition from military to civilian life can be challenging for service members and their families. Recognizing this, Howard Community College will offer a four-week evening class called “Welcome Home Veterans.” The course will present service members with the skills, strategies, and resources to successfully navigate the transition from life in the armed forces to life at home. Topics include transitioning back into family life, translating military skills into civilian employment, re-establishing relationships with family and friends, and adjusting to war-related injuries or illnesses at home and at work. Participants will learn practical skills and methods--such as resume writing and options for furthering their education--to manage this life passage and to make themselves marketable in the workforce. Course instructor Dr. Maria Mouratidis, a licensed clinical neuropsychologist for the National Naval Medical Center, has worked extensively with service members and their families. She coordinates behavioral health care services for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom patients. As a Command Consultant, Dr. Mouratidis regularly briefs members of Congress, Pentagon officials, and foreign dignitaries, and represents the class="hl"National Naval Medical Center in collaborations with local, state, and federal partners. The class runs Tuesdays from September 22 through October 13, 7:00-9:00 p.m., at Wilde Lake High School in Columbia and costs $79.
