COLUMBIA, MD --- The Chronicle of Higher Education announced Howard Community College’s selection as a 2009 “Great College to Work For” based on exceptional work environments. The recognition program, which is academe’s version of Fortune’s popular “100 Best Companies to Work For” issue, evaluated 247 two- and four-year colleges in the United States. Howard Community College was the only community college in Maryland to be cited with national recognition. The announcement was posted this morning on The Chronicle’s Web site, www.chronicle.com. The Chronicle of Higher Education, cited often as the leading source on current issues in higher education, recognized Howard Community College as a “Great College to Work For” in 11 of the 15 categories: Work Environment - Job Satisfaction; Faculty-Administration Relations & Collaborative Governance; Facilities, Security, and Work Space; and Supervisor-Department Chair Relationship; Pay and Benefits - Health Insurance, Vacation or Paid Time Off; and Institutional Policies - Professional/Career Development Programs; Worklife Balance; Confidence in Senior Leadership; Internal Communications; and Connection to Institution and Pride. Howard Community College has a total of 1,525 employees, of which 472 are faculty and 1,053 are staff. “All of us at Howard Community College are honored to be selected as a 2009 Great College to Work For,” said Dr. Kate Hetherington, president of Howard Community College. “There is a secret ingredient as to why an overwhelming number of faculty and staff enjoy their work so much at HCC --- everything we do is focused on student success.” The national recognition is based on the results of a survey completed in March and April 2009 by faculty and staff at 247 two- and four-year colleges. More than 41,000 employees nationwide participated in the survey, which was administered by ModernThink LLC, a Wilmington-Delaware based human resources consulting firm. Institutions were recognized in three categories: small (fewer than 3000 students), medium (3,000-9,900 students) and large (10,000 or more students). “The Board of Trustees has long believed that HCC attracts the most exceptional and gifted faculty and staff,” said Chair of the Board of Trustees for Howard Community College T. James Truby. “The Chronicle of Higher Education’s recognition affirms what we, on the Board, have known for quite sometime --- Howard Community College is a premier institution because of the stellar people who enjoy making it thrive day after day, year after year.” About HCC Howard Community College (HCC) is a publicly funded two-year community college serving the educational needs of the citizens and employers in Howard County, Maryland since 1970.
