HCC Announces New and Renewed Scholarships for the 2008-2009 Fiscal Year

(Columbia, MD) – Howard Community College (HCC) announces new and renewed scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year.  HCC students that meet the criteria are encouraged to apply. The scholarships are listed below:

New Scholarships for 2008 Academic Year

Financial Need

COGS (Coalition of Geriatric Services, Inc.) Caregiver Scholarships – awarded to students in the Continuing Education CNA program. Financial need is primary criterion. Recipients should have an interest in providing care for older adults, as the objective of the sponsoring organization (COGS) is to improve services to older adults.

Pamela Makowski Goresh Memorial Scholarship - $1,000 annual award to student enrolled in the English Composition class (or equivalent). The English Division Chair will recommend a student whose writing has demonstrated achievement, potential, and enthusiasm for using the written word. Student must show financial need. The family would like to see a copy of the awardees’ essay.

M.T.A. Woman’s Basketball Scholarship – financial need, minimum 2.0 GPA, full-time student, basketball player for HCC.

Bruce A. Pfeufer Foundation Piano and Theatre Scholarship – financial need; minimum 2.0 GPA; full-time student; spring semester only; student can choose whether award funds tuition/fees or books/supplies; for one piano student and one theatre major (prefers a student who plans to further their career in the theatre after college); Director of Music to choose piano student and Director of Theatre to choose theatre student.

Beverly White-Seals Scholarship – student must be majoring in a healthcare program and be a participant in the Career Links program.  Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, be a Howard County Resident and have financial need. Optional: student recipients may be eligible to schedule a day in the hospital with Dr. Silverman.

Renewed for the 2008 Academic Year

Financial Need

Roger and Patti Caplan/Faye Miller Teacher Education Scholarship –

1.             Scholarship money will be awarded to first-year students enrolling in the teacher education program at Howard Community College.

2.             A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required.

3.             Demonstration of financial need is required.

Carroll – Howard Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors Scholarship – financial need and educational potential.

Hoerichs Memorial Nursing Scholarship (in Honor of Alta Marie) – Financial need; 2.4 GPA; student must be enrolled in at least one clinical nursing course during the semester; RN or LPN program; scholarship can continue from semester to semester if recipient meets criteria; Director of Nursing to work with Director of Scholarships to choose two (2) qualified nursing students, each to receive $5,000 for the year.

John J. Leidy Foundation Scholarship:

1.             To be used for a scholarship program based upon demonstrated need, and upon the imposition of reasonable academic standards. To be used exclusively for tuition, fees, books, supplies and room and board where applicable. Any modification in use must receive the Foundation’s prior approval.

2.             Grants shall be made to one or divided among more students as appropriate. Scholarship recipients are required to be Maryland residents.

3.             Grants shall be made strictly for educational purposes, and no funds provided will be used to carry on propaganda, or other attempts to influence any legislation, or to influence the outcome of any specific elections, or to carry on any voter registration drive.

4.             That the Foundation will be provided with the name, address, age, etc. of the recipients, reason for selection, area of study, etc. Failure to do so before next January 31 will be grounds for non-renewal of grant. In addition, recipients of grants must be encouraged to submit a letter to us with information about themselves.

Nick Vogel Photography Scholarship – Current photography student, full or part time; minimum GPA of 3.0; need based; recipient to be chosen by the Director of Photography Program.

Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County Scholarship –

1.             Low- and moderate-income women who want to take courses that lead to employment and/or improve their career possibilities.

2.             Preference is given to coursework that supports enhanced employment opportunities or skill based capacity building.

3.             Personal development courses like yoga or physical conditioning maybe supported under special circumstances.

4.             Students can be employed or unemployed.

5.             Applicant must be a Howard County resident and have completed at least high school or its equivalent.

Non-Need:

Don Dixon Aquatic Training Fund Scholarship – Students enrolled in HCC for at least one semester with a GPA of 3.0 or greater; student may apply for paid openings in HCC pool aquatics; upon successful completion of Aquatic Therapy or Aquatic Exercise Certification including CPR.

Ellicott City Lions Club Scholarship –

1.             Half of the scholarship money per year should be awarded to students who are business- and computer-related majors. Student must address the following questions in their essay:

a.               How will a scholarship help you and/or your family?

b.              What do you envision as a career and benefit of your education?

2.             Half of the scholarship money per year should be awarded to students participating in Division I or II athletics at HCC. Student must address the following in their essay:

a.               Why do you hope to receive a scholarship?

b.              How will a scholarship help you and/or your family?

c.               What do you envision as a career and benefit of your education?

d.              In what college sport will you be competing?

3.             It is the option of the Ellicott City Lions Club to name one of the scholarships awarded as “The Franklin D. Baker Scholarship.”

a.               The Franklin D. Baker Scholarship will provide full tuition to one student per year. If the recipient is academically successful in this first year, second-year funding for full tuition will be made available again. Students need to be a Howard County citizen, in academic good standing, and in need of financial assistance. Preference will be given to students in business- and computer-related majors. Members of the Lions Club would like to have the HCC Financial Aid office handle the selection process with their input.

Engineering Honors Learning Community Scholarship – For students in the engineering honors learning community (including Constellation Energy Scholarships); non-need based; students to be chosen by Science/Technology Division Chair.

Marian Iglehart Nursing Scholarship – Students must write an essay. Funds used toward daily living expenses, tuition, fees, books, supplies, and uniforms. (Donor Representative: Harry Iglehart and family)

Jordan’s Steakhouse International Hospitality Internship Scholarship – Non-need based chosen by Director of Hospitality and Culinary Management; hospitality/culinary major; minimum 3.0 GPA; student required to pay a portion of the cost of the program ($1,500); student must participate in interview process; donor to be involved in interview and selection process

Schulte Travel Fellowship Scholarship:

1.         Applicants must be a United States Citizen, at least 18 years of age, and residents of Maryland.

2.         Applicants must hold a GPA of 3.0 at the college level and must have completed at least 12 credits in their program of study. A transcript must accompany the application.

Judith L. Triebman Scholarship Fund – To be awarded to a student who is served by HCC’s Student Support Services and who has successfully completed English 097 and planning to take English 121 at HCC with a grade of 2.0 (C) or better. Applicants should write a 250-500 word essay that answers the question: “How will a college education be beneficial to me?” One letter of recommendation is required from either an English tutor or English instructor who has work with the applicant and knows the student’s level of motivation, commitment and accomplishment.

Need Based:

Charles and Delores Klein Memorial Scholarship – financial need and educational potential.

Columbia Flier Scholarship – financial need and educational potential.

Corridor Reznick, LLC Commercial Real Estate Scholarship – student looking to pursue a career in commercial real estate upon graduation. Must have a 3.0 average and financial need.

Harkins Builders, Inc Scholarship – for student in construction program in financial need with educational potential.

Lockheed Martin IT Scholarship – prefer high academic standing, IT curriculum, and financial need.

PNC Bank Scholarship – based on financial need and educational potential for a worthy student in a degree program.

Riparius Construction Scholarship – financial need and educational potential.

Ryland Homes Scholarship – financial need and educational potential.

Wachovia Bank Scholarship – financial need and educational potential.

Non-Need Based:

Design Collective Scholarship – at the discretion of the foundation.

Nick and Mary Mangione Hospitality Scholarship – hospitality program student or Turf Valley employee that maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA. 

HCC’s Educational Foundation maintains endowment and scholarship programs established through generous contributions from private businesses, foundations, civic organizations, and individuals.
