Award-winning medical correspondent is author of online column “The Empowered Patient”

(Columbia, MD) – CNN Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen will discuss the ins and outs of healthcare in an April 30, 2008 presentation at Howard Community College (HCC). 

Cohen is the author of CNN’s online column, “The Empowered Patient.”  During her 16-year tenure at CNN, Cohen has reported award-winning stories from Ground Zero following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, from military hospitals during Hurricane Katrina and from Virginia Tech following the shooting massacre in April 2007. 

She has received several awards for her work. In 1997, her coverage of the Phen-Fen diet drug earned her a first-place award in the American Medical Association's International Health and Medical Film Competition. She also is the recipient of the 1997 Russell L. Cecil Medical Journalism Award in the television category.  A winner of the outstanding alumna award from Columbia College, Cohen received a bachelor's degree in history. She earned a master's degree in public health from Boston University.

Guests can mingle with Ms. Cohen at a reception beginning at 6 p.m., followed by her presentation at 7.  Light food and refreshments will be served.  Admission is $20 for the general public and free for HCC students. Call 410-772-4814 by April 25, 2008 to RSVP.
