Documentary follows life-long friendship between two local men against the backdrop of civil rights movement

(Columbia, MD) –As part of Howard Community College’s (HCC) Diversity Week (April 7-April 11, 2008), the college will host the first Howard County screening of the documentary “Pip and Zastrow: An American Friendship” on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Kittleman Room (ELB-100) on the HCC campus.  A brief 6:30 p.m. reception will precede the screening, and a question and answer session with the film’s producer and other special guests will follow.  Admission is free, but seating is limited and pre-registration is encouraged.   To pre-register or for more information, contact HCC’s Office of Student Life at 410-772-4896 or studentlife@howardcc.edu.  For more information on the film, visit www.pipandzastrow.com.

“Pip & Zastrow” is the true story of two men who cross racial boundaries during segregation in the 1940s and form a life-long friendship that takes extraordinary turns. With humor, compassion and heartbreak, Pip and Zastrow navigate through 60 years against the backdrop of the civil rights movement and a country that has yet to overcome deep-seated racism and social inequity.  Inspired by actual events that took place in Annapolis, MD following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the film was produced by local filmmakers Victoria Bruce and Karin Hayes, whose films have been featured on HBO and Cinemax, as well as other national and international cable channels.
