McCuan Family Donates $1.2 Million to HCCDecember 14, 2006
Single mothers, displaced homemakers to benefit; “McCuan Hall” to be named
(Columbia, MD) -- Single mothers and homemakers re-entering the job market will be among the students at Howard Community College (HCC) who will benefit from a $1.2 million donation bequeathed by Jill and Patrick McCuan and the McCuan Family Trust, college officials announced today. The donation is the largest cash gift received by HCC.“What an incredible holiday gift for the college,” said HCC President Mary Ellen Duncan. “The McCuan’s have a long history of support for HCC, and this is another dimension of their generosity. We are deeply grateful for their tremendous heart for students and commitment to education.”
Of the full donation, $200,000 is dedicated to the existing McCuan Family Foundation Endowment. Established in 1994, the Endowment supports students in HCC’s Career Links Program, which helps low-income single parents and displaced homemakers succeed in college and in the workplace. The McCuan Endowment provides financial assistance with tuition, books, and fees. Career Links provides counseling, support groups, workshops, and mentoring.
The $200,000 is a matching gift that will be provided as the college raises a comparable amount. With a current fund balance of $250,000, the Endowment will grow to a total of $650,000 when the McCuan gift is fully matched. The college has until 2010 to match the gift. Students benefiting from the Endowment are called “McCuan Scholars.”
The remaining $1 million will be provided to the college and are not earmarked for a particular purpose. The HCC Educational Foundation will provide recommendations for using the money.
As a tribute to the donors, the College will rename the existing Administration/Classroom Building to McCuan Hall. The building houses the Thomas Akins Art Gallery, HCC-TV studio, Mass Media program, several classrooms, the Office of the President, and other administrative offices. The building will be dedicated to Jill and Patrick McCuan and the McCuan Family Trust.
The McCuan’s reside in Naples, Florida and own a horse farm in Howard County. Patrick is CEO of MDG Companies, a national real estate investment corporation with offices in Naples, Florida, Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, and Columbia, Maryland. Jill is a retired banker and currently serves as the chairman, Board of Governors of St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, Virginia.
The McCuan Family Trust headquartered in Naples, Florida, is a foundation set up to provide funding to educational institutions for new building projects. Recent building grants to the University of Maryland Baltimore, St. Margaret’s School and Otterbein College have been announced by its Board of Directors.
