Rajiv thought he wanted to pursue a career in medicine, and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology as a first step. But by the time he graduated, he knew in his heart that he was not on the right track. He was more interested in accounting, and decided to pursue a career as a certified public accountant (CPA).
He enrolled in a respected MBA program, and secured and completed an internship at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), one of the world’s largest and most reputable accounting firms. With a job opportunity on his doorstep, time was of the essence. Rajiv needed to sit for the CPA exam sooner rather than later, but his MBA program offered no flexibility or waivers. Rajiv realized he needed to find a different program that could better support his goals and immediate opportunities.
That’s when he learned about the CPA Exam Candidacy and Licensure Program offered at Howard Community College (HCC). It could expedite and streamline his path into the job market, saving him both time and money.
“HCC gave me the same, if not better, educational foundation to tackle the CPA exam material, at a fraction of the cost of four-year institutions or graduate programs,” said Rajiv, who completed the program in one year. “The classes I needed were offered in the evenings, so at the same time, I was able to start working full-time as an associate at PwC.”
Reflecting back on his experience at HCC, Rajiv admits that he was surprised to meet so many other students, who, just like him, were pursuing a career change a few years after earning a four-year degree.
“I met people of all ages who were changing jobs or between jobs; there is big mix of people on campus so no one needs to worry about feeling out of place or like they are too old to go back to school,” said Rajiv. “If you are thinking about changing your career path to go into accounting, this is definitely the route to go. I received an excellent education without having to take out any student loans.”
Since completing the program at HCC, Rajiv successfully passed the CPA exam and has been promoted at PwC.
