By the time he was 12 years old, Felix had called six states and 10 cities home. When his family settled for good in Columbia, he knew it was a place he would like to stay. A few short years later when it was time to make a decision about where to go to college, the answer was obvious. Howard Community College was practically in his backyard, and it offered everything Felix was wanted to learn and grow.
“I came here feeling a bit insecure and unconfident, and that changed quickly once I got to HCC,” said Felix. “One of my teachers, Zachary Pajak, literally changed my life. He was so supportive and helped me see my strengths. Because of him, I am growing, slowly but surely.”
Felix is known by his family and friends as a true multi-tasker, for good reason. In addition to his status as a full-time student at HCC, he has worked at two casinos, serving as a marketing representative with focus on events, promotions, and customer relations. He also works as an intern in the public relations and marketing office at HCC, supporting social media efforts. He is working hard now, with confidence that his dedication and persistence will pay off later in life.
“My dream is to run my own public relations agency in a big city – maybe New York or Los Angeles,” said Felix. “I am passionate about my work and will do whatever it takes to achieve my goals.”
He is certain that his experience at HCC has provided a good head start and the foundation he will need when he transfers to Towson University in Fall 2017.
“I sometimes go back to my high school and speak with students about what I have accomplished at HCC, and encourage them to consider coming to school here,” Felix said. “You get a big bang for your buck at this community college, and you have opportunities here earlier than might be available at a four-year school. It’s a great place to be.”
