Food for Thought: Identity Markers
Recording artist, Amara La Negra is at the center of controversy related to the color of her skin and the texture of her hair. Some suggest that she is one example of the community’s larger issues with colorism and body image. She brings the complexity of her Afro Latina identity to the forefront. Why is Amara La Negra’s appearance a source of debate? How is her story representative of other women of color? What makes the texture of one’s hair so controversial?
