ABOUT "THE FOREIGNER"...
Shue crosses all comic boundaries with this brilliantly written play which demonstrates what can happen when a group of deviously tricky characters must deal with a stranger who (they think) knows no English. The story takes us to kind-hearted Betty Meeks' run-down, soon-to-be condemned fishing lodge in Georgia visited by Froggy LeSeuer, a British demolition expert. Froggy brings his friend, Charlie, a painfully shy young man who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. Froggy tells lodge guests that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. The side-splitting fun begins when Charlie overhears more than he should while others believe he doesn't understand a word being said!
The Foreigner has received two Obie and two Outer Critics Circle Awards as Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production. |
