(Parental guidance suggested. Recommended for ages 13 and up.) | | ABOUT SPRING'S AWAKENING: Tragedy of Childhood | Out of winter's darkness... into life and hope.
Frank Wedekind's lyrical, thoughtful, and provocative 1891 play reflects on the mysterious and complex passage from innocence to adulthood. Over a hundred years after being banned throughout Europe for its starkly honest depiction of adolescent emotions and sexuality, this masterpiece went on to inspire the Tony Award-winning musical.
Before Hair, there was Spring's Awakening. In their energetic, tumultuous and complicated search for identity and freedom, Wedekind's teenagers grapple with the ever current concerns of sexual identity and expression, questioning authority, unplanned pregnancies, abuse, parental conflict, and bohemianism. Tim Wolf Sunstroke | | BUY TIX About the Show Press Release About Us Facebook Back to the Top | | BIO for the Director: MICHAEL STEBBINS | Michael Stebbins (director), born in Buffalo, NY and raised in Kenosha, WI, has been involved in theatre since the age of six and has been working professionally since the age of 17. He has been a singer/dancer at theme parks and on cruise ships, acted at some of the most prestigious regional theatres across the country (including California’s Berkeley Repertory Theatre, recipient of a 1997 Tony Award for outstanding regional theatre), appeared in commercial and independent films, and has directed community, college, summer stock and regional theatre plays, musicals and operas. Michael has written plays, with a focus on the history of vaudeville, which have been produced regionally and in NYC. He founded Stage Door Acting Ensemble of NY, Inc., a not-for-profit theatre in NYC and is the recipient of a Helen Hayes Tribute Award.
As an educator, Michael has guest-lectured and taught at numerous universities on subjects ranging from “acting” to “theatre appreciation” to “acting for the opera” to “audition techniques” and the “business of theatre.” He has coached actors privately, and several of his students have appeared on top regional and Broadway stages and have gained admittance to respected acting programs.
Michael is featured in Walt Witcover’s “Living on Stage – a Practical Approach to Acting from the Inside-Out” and Lynne Rogers/Mari Lyn Henry’s “How to be a Working Actor” (fifth edition), two books that are considered “bibles” for the student and professional actor.
Michael has been the producing artistic director of Rep Stage, the professional theatre in residence at Howard Community College, since the fall of 2005. Prior to coming to Columbia, MD, Michael was based in NYC for 13 years. He studied theatre performance and history at UMBC and holds his BFA and MFA in theatre performance and history from the University Wisconsin Milwaukee’s Professional Theatre Training Program. Michael is a long-standing member of Screen Actors Guild and Actors’ Equity Association.
Michael is grateful to HCC’s Arts & Humanities Theatre Department, to Dr. Lisa A. Wilde, and HCC’s Arts Collective for the opportunity to work with such a talented group of individuals, particularly the students who grace the stage in this production. | | BUY TIX About the Show Press Release About Us Facebook Back to the Top | | ABOUT US: HCC's Theatre Arts & Arts Collective | ARTS COLLECTIVE'S (AC) productions and projects are about supporting, nurturing and fusing collaborative relationships with all artists from students to professionals... & all in between @HCC!
