AC responds enthusiastically and responsibly to the emergent interest and increasing excitement within the Arts at Howard Community College via vital and dynamic programming, bringing students, staff and the community into the college’s performance spaces, rehearsal halls, and classrooms. - Education and Training:
AC believes in the unity of the Arts and its crucial role in education. Dedicated to educating the whole person, The Arts Collective fosters artistic excellence within the areas of Theatre, Dance, Music, Design, and Technical Theatre. The Arts Collective is committed to offering artistic, hands-on training, on and off the stage, to future practitioners interested in pursuing careers in the Arts (within educational, community, and professional arenas) under the guidance of professional leaders. - Integrity and Truth:
AC promotes artistic integrity within its programming and within its participants, seeking always to inspire, nurture, challenge, and empower artists and audiences. The Arts Collective explores truth within the arts by taking risks, asking questions and pushing for answers within a safe and disciplined environment. - Collaboration:

PRODUCTIONS Three to four major productions are mounted each year, usually in HCC's Horowitz Center's Studio Theatre. AC productions feature professional and student directors, designers, stage managers, technicians, run crew, carpenters, electricians, etc., and many, many outrageously gifted student and alumni performers! (See HOW MANY PRODUCTIONS? below for more info)! NEW: Musical Theatre Revues Inspired by HCC's new Musical Theatre Major, AC now produces one Musical Theatre Revue each year, featuring the various exciting styles included in this popular genre... as well as many incredible performers, choreographers, and musicians! DANCE COMPANY AC offered it's first Dance Company performance during March, 2007, with OURSPACE, directed by Jenny Male, previously HCC's Coordinator of Dance & Movement. This new entity, now under the direction of Renee Brozic Barger, AC's Dance Company promises to offer future opportunities within the world of dance! ACTORS' STUDIO; WORKS IN PROGRESS An AC entity that develops and performs original productions over the span of one semester… usually every other year. This group began as a touring troupe, but now makes its home in HCC's Horowitz Center's Studio Theatre. (We'll soon link you up to our Original Works History Page ... it's pretty impressive - something AC is very proud of)! ORIGINAL PLAY READING SERIES One bare stage. Words. Voices. A branch-off of AC's Actors' Studio; Works In Progress. Student, Alumni, Staff, and Local Playwrights are invited from time to time to submit original works. Those chosen in the past have received readings in front of a live audience over several consecutive weekends. The directors are comprised of students and guest artists. The actors featured are our most gifted students and alumni. Certainly an entity that continues to grow, offering more opportunities for writers, directors and actors... and audiences yearning for fresh voices. (Again, posting soon: Original Works History Page)! IMPROV GROUP YO' MAMA'S COOKIN' is AC's extremely successful (and hilariously fun) 9 year-old performance group directed by Jenny Male, Sue Kramer and student directors. Improv auditions new talent at the top of various semesters, with various Friday Night performances on campus. OPEN-MIC'S & SHOWCASES AC Open-Mic's and Showcases are classified as one-day/night only events. Our Open-Mic's have been on hold for a while... but definately an event we're hoping to bring back... and soon! Usually, they're open to all who wish to share brief artistic pieces including poetry, theatre, music, etc. Past Open-Mic's have also featured visual art, and have been presented in venues in and outside of HCC's campus. Showcases, on the other hand, are events featured each semester... they may include... just about anything, (such as AC's 13th Season PREMIERE)! FREE WORKSHOP SERIES & INFO SESSIONS AC's "friend raiser," offering brief, FREE training in dance, movement, audition techniques, etc. Open to students, alumni, staff AND the community! Hugely popular! AC's INFO SESSIONS have provided a fabulous platform for Q & A Sessions, Meet and Greet Sessions... and are usually scheduled at the top of each semester or prior to auditions. Thus far, they've been crazy well attended! TECHNICAL OPPORTUNITIES The beauty of offering opportunities in theatre within a community college; HANDS ON EXPERIENCE in the World of Technical Theatre! We recruit folks with and without previous experience throughout the year! We are always looking for committed folks interested in carpentry, lights, sound, props, costumes, run crew, etc… year 'round! Training provided. Some positions are paid! A must: folks who enjoy the Performing Arts!
