Index – Choreographed by the nationally renowned Murray Louis, restaged and directed by Alberto del Saz (New York) and coached by Marilyn Byers. Index is a representation of Louis’ creative process where the idea of ‘Unique Gesture’ is a profound dance concept that combines the body, mind and spirit.
Study in Frames – Choreographed by Talani Torres (Florida), the ACDC guest artist’s work is a representation of the concept of emotional confinement and physical boundaries explored in movement and viewed through the lens of a camera.
Stay – Choreographed by Renée Brozic Barger, ACDC’s director and professor and director of HCC’s dance program presents a work in which the dancing is alternately “raw and vulnerable/ tough and cruel, stark and isolating/ passionate and lush.”
Under The Sun – Choreographed by Joan Nicholas-Walker, ACDC’s assistant director and HCC faculty member. "A contemporary modern work that features a complex character that is uncomfortable in his role. Is the role appointed or selected?”
Jeff, Andy, and the Business of Art – Choreographed by S. J. Ewing (DC), ACDC guest artist, offers a work where the focus is on Andy Warhol and Pop Art.
Happily Ever Laughter – Choreographed by Stephanie Yezek Jolivet, HCC dance instructor, presents a work inspired by “contemporary and matrimonial bliss."
Rise – Choreographed by Jen Graham (MD), guest artist, offers a work embarking on a journey about insecurities and anxiety.
Werkin'.... The dance major at HCC is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and diverse education in dance, including:
- A rigorous and focused education that will prepare the student for transfer into a BA, BS, or BFA program at a four year college or university - Dance faculty dedicated to assessing student progress in order to meet individual needs - Master classes taught by locally and internationally reknowned guest teachers - Opportunities for performance, including HCC*s Arts Collective Dance Company and student showcases
For those who wish to pursue dance for personal enrichment, we provide students at every level with a variety of dance classes at convenient times, in an atmosphere which is both challenging and supportive. All dance courses are available to any student who has met the prerequisite(s), regardless of declaration of major.
To learn more about the dance program at HCC, contact Director of Dance Renée Brozic Barger by e-mail: rbarger@howardcc.edu | | AC's 18th SEASON ABOUT THE WORKS THE DIRECTORS MAILING LIST/FACEBOOK ABOUT US AC HOME | ABOUT THE DIRECTORS: | Renée Brozic Barger (Artistic Director) is HCC’s Director of Dance, and has been performing, teaching and making dances in the Baltimore/DC Metro Area for over fifteen years. She is a founding director of movement/addiction, a dance-based multi-media performance company. She holds her BA in visual and performing arts from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and her MFA in dance from George Mason University. Most recently, she has taught, choreographed and performed internationally in the US, Canada, India and the UK. She has been called “aristocratic and elegant” by the Oxford Times, and “brilliantly angular” and “fragile and powerful” by the Oxfringe Review. Recent collaborations of an improvisational nature have been with the Basso Moderno Duo and Timothy Nohe. In addition to performance-related projects, Renée has been increasingly focusing on arts advocacy work within Maryland as a member of Maryland Citizens of the Arts Emerging Arts Advocates, a group that endeavors to educate the next generation of Maryland arts advocates, and to provide advocacy training, professional development, and leadership opportunities to young advocates in the arts area.
Joan Nicholas-Walker (Assistant Director) currently teaches in the dance programs at Howard Community College, University of Maryland Baltimore County and Community College of Baltimore County. After earning her BFA degree in dance from George Mason University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in dance from The Ohio State University, she has consistently worked as a performer, choreographer, dance educator and arts administrator in several states. Her choreographic work has been commissioned by high school and college dance programs, performed by professional dance companies and selected for dance festivals around the United States and abroad. She was the Founder/Artistic Director of NickWalk Dance Project, a modern dance company, for four years when she was based in Raleigh, North Carolina.
