What is mediation?
- A process of resolving conflicts with the assistance of a neutral third person (the mediator) who helps participants reach an agreement that is mutually acceptable, fair, and workable;
- Voluntary;
- Confidential and private;
- A win-win solution; and
- An informal process, unlike litigation.
What are the roles of the mediators?
- To guide the process and enable the participants to communicate clearly with one another;
- To be neutral and impartial;
- To help participants reach their own agreement; and
- To facilitate the process, not to give advice.
What are the benefits of mediation?
- Fast: Mediation sessions are scheduled and handled quickly.
- Free/affordable: Services are provided either free or on a sliding scale.
- Flexible: Sessions can be scheduled any time and anywhere for the convenience of the parties involved in the conflict.
- Empowering: Mediation offers the opportunity to resolve personal conflicts and to reach a personal agreement that is both fair and reasonable.
- Confidential and private: All information related to a mediation is confidential.
- Safe and less stressful: Mediation sessions are held in a neutral, nonthreatening, and safe place, and the process is less formal than in a court trial.
- Successful: Almost all mediations result in an agreement.
