| Showcase | Mental Illness impacts the lives of 60 million Americans and is one of the leading causes of disabilities in the U.S. Mental illnesses are more common than cancer, diabetes or heart disease, yet stigma erodes confidence that mental disorders are real, treatable health conditions. They often first strike during adolescence and young adulthood. In the first half hour of Showcase, HCC Radio student Mike Gambino interviews representatives from the Howard County affiliate of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Joining him in the studio are Executive Director Susan Helsel and David Stant, In Our Own Voice presenter and facilitator for the Young Adult Connection Support Group. Ms. Helsel and Mr. Stant discuss the prevalence of mental illness, the mission and services of NAMI, stigma busters, and how NAMI can be of help to the HCC community. In the second half hour of Showcase, we go from Las Vegas to Ecuador to Honduras to… Howard County, MD. Mike Ross was a student at Howard Community College. You might know him better from when he was on Real World 25 Las Vegas in 2011. After Real World, Mike decided not do the bar circuit, but instead to use his notoriety to do humanitarian work in Central and South America. HCC Radio student Matt Trudel interviews Mike about his experience as a Real World and Read World Challenge participant as well as his life-changing experiences helping international communities in need. Showcase is an original production of HCC Radio The Dragon, highlighting work by students in our radio curriculum. Tune in Tuesdays at 7am, 1pm, and 8pm; Fridays at 8am, 1pm, and 8pm; Saturdays at 2pm; and Sundays at 9pm. | Words | In the first half of Words: Fashioned after the national This I Believe project, students in HCC's Writing for Radio and Multimedia class set about writing short radio essays about their personal beliefs…in four hundred words or less: not an easy task! The finished projects are as diverse as the students, from manifestos about food to declarations about overcoming disabilities. Take a listen to what drives our HCC students each day. Their voices are intimate, honest, and very real. The HCC This I Believe radio essay collection is an original production of HCC Radio The Dragon. In the second half of Words, it's The Writing Life: From four Maryland poets to a pair of Nobel Laureates - Saul Bellow and Seamus Heaney - more than sixty poets and writers have appeared on HoCoPoLitSo's Cable TV series since 1986. The half-hour shows are hosted by well-known Baltimore-Washington writers, and guests range from interesting newer writers to some of the most distinguished names in contemporary letters. HCC Radio The Dragon streams select conversations from The Writing Life to appear on the radio version of the show. Tune into Words Mondays at 7am and 2pm; Thursdays at 8am, 1pm, and 9pm; and Saturdays at 8am, 1pm and 10pm. | Green Dragon | Each month on Green Dragon, we bring you an hour of programming dedicated to sustainability issues. During this month's episode we focus on food. Farming significantly contributes to climate change: the food system uses more fossil fuel than any other subdivision of the economy. On Earth Rocks, our feature presentation and an original production of HCC Radio The Dragon, we talk to Brian Hughes, a veteran farmer and manager of Shaw Farm, an organic CSA in Howard County, MD. Then we present an episode of Destination DIY Radio and we peak into the lives of a pair recent college graduates turned new farmers. And we'll end the hour with an episode of Earth Eats and some hands on instruction of how to make killer biscuits…and what to do with all those root vegetables. You can hear the Green Dragon Hour Mondays at 3pm and 10pm; Wednesdays at 7am, 2pm, and 8pm; and Saturdays at 9am and 8pm. |
