Eligibility and Time Period
In the event of a death in the immediate family, full-time, position control/ budgeted staff and faculty of Howard Community College are entitled to a period of up to five days of leave with pay. The period of paid bereavement leave will be pro-rated for part-time, position control/budgeted employees. Bereavement leave is available to employees during the probationary period. All requests for bereavement leave should be submitted on a Request for Leave form available on the college portal.
The immediate family is defined as a person who is a parent, step-parent, parent-in-law, child, step-child, sibling, step-sibling, grandparent, grandchild, spouse, foster child, or any member of the household. Employees may request personal leave, annual leave or leave without pay for deaths of relatives or friends in categories other than those listed above.
Accrual of Leave and Automatic Leave Sequence
There is no accrual of bereavement leave. Individuals accrue annual leave and sick leave while on bereavement leave. When an absence does not qualify for bereavement leave and therefore other types of leave are used, the accrual and automatic leave sequence for the type of leave used will apply.
