Eligibility and Time Period
In the event of a death in the immediate family, full-time, position control/ budgeted staff and faculty are entitled to a period of up to five days of leave with pay. The period of paid bereavement leave will be pro-rated for part-time, position control/budgeted employees. Bereavement leave is available to employees during the probationary period. All requests for bereavement leave should be submitted on a Bereavement Leave form available in the office of human resources.
Immediate FamilyThe immediate family is defined as parent, step-parent, parent-in-law, child, step-child, brother, sister, step-brother or step-sister, grandparent, grandchild, spouse, foster child or any member of the household. Employees may request personal leave, annual leave or leave without pay for deaths of relatives or friends in categories other than those listed above.
Accrual of Leave and Automatic Leave Sequence - There is no accrual of bereavement leave.
- Individuals accrue annual leave and sick leave while on bereavement leave.
- When an absence does not qualify for bereavement leave and therefore other types of leave are used, the accrual and automatic leave sequence for the type of leave used will apply.
- There is no automatic leave sequence applicable for bereavement leave.
